Chris Stain a transformé la Carmichael Gallery en un toit new-yorkais doté d’un pigeonnier et ambiancé de jazz. Ses portraits énigmatiques intégrés dans cette grande installation offre une perspective unique sur la vie contemporaine urbaine. L’installation sert de toile de fond à ses œuvres inédites comportant pochoir, peinture, techniques mixtes sur métal et objets trouvés. A travers cette exposition Chris Stain prolonge son intérêt pour la lutte de ceux qui passent souvent inaperçus dans le redoutable milieu urbain.
«Mon travail explore la lutte psychologique et physique qui consiste à grandir dans un environnement urbain. Grâce au pochoirs et aux installations faites à partir de matériaux de récupération, j’espère inspirer la compassion pour les personnes régulièrement négligées par la société. » – Chris Stain
Chris Stain est né à Baltimore, Maryland. Il apprend la gravure à l’Université, ce qui le conduit au pochoir lorsqu’il manque d’argent pour l’équipement nécessaire.
Son inspiration prend sa source dans ses origines modestes de l’Est de Baltimore. Les gens qu’il décrit dans ses oeuvres portent sur eux les stigmates de la lutte pour une vie meilleure à laquelle nous pouvons tous nous identifier, en particulier à notre époque.
Chris Stain est un artiste engagé comme il y en a peu. Et ce n’est pas un hasard si les parisiens l’ont découvert en novembre 2007 à la Galerie L.J. Beaubourg aux côtés de Swoon.

Chris Stain transformed the gallery into a NYC rooftop scene, complete with pigeon coop and live jazz music. The enigmatic stencil portraits integrated into the large-scale installation offer a unique perspective of contemporary inner city life. The installation serves as a seamless-back drop for his new work featuring stencil, spray paint, and mixed media on metal and found objects. The show continues Stain’s interest in considering and revealing the struggles of those that often go unnoticed in today’s daunting urban environment.
« My work explores the emotional and physical struggle of growing up in an urban environment. Through hand-cut stencils and installations made from found materials I hope to inspire compassion for the often overlooked individuals of society. » – Chris Stain

Chris Stain was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He learned printmaking in high school, which later led to stencil cutting when money wasn’t readily available for printmaking equipment. His subject matter is drawn from his working class upbringing on Baltimore’s east side. The people he portrays in his work carry with them the struggle for a better life that all of us can relate to, especially in the current times.
Chris Stain is a social and politically committed artist and there are really few. And it is no coincidence that the Parisians discovered him alongside Swoon in November 2007 in the L.J. Beaubourg Gallery.
