SHX Interview : L.E.T., Düsseldorf

L.E.T. vit à Düsseldorf. Son inspiration est à la fois intérieure et nourrie du quotidien. On a ainsi l’impression de voir différentes influences le traverser sous certains aspects : Boxi, Banksy ou Nemo pour ses ombres chinoises. Et pourtant, de nombreuses pièces de rue ou d’atelier m’ont suffisamment marquée pour que je veuille en savoir plus sur cet artiste au nom qui signifie tant pour les Français.

L.E.T. lives in Düsseldorf. His inspiration is both inside and daily. Some influences can be detected through some aspects: Boxi, Banksy or Nemo for his shadows. And yet, many indoor and outdoor artworks hit me so much that I wanted to know more about this artist whose name means so much to French people.
D’où vient ton pseudonyme L.E.T.?
C’est un sigle pour “Les Enfants Terribles”, écrit par le français Jean Cocteau en 1929. J’aimais l’idée d’utiliser ce titre comme nom, symbolique d’une certaine forme artistique contemporaine.
Where does your name come from?
My name comes from Jean Cocteau´s prose book “Les Enfants Terribles” from 1929. I liked to use this name/title for a contemporary art form.

Quelle est l’histoire d’un Français vivant en Allemagne ?
Je suis né à Düsseldorf en fait. A six mois nous avons déménagé au Costa Rica où nous sommes restés 10 ans. Mon père travaillant dans l’aide au développement avait un travail là-bas. Après ça on a passé 1 ou 2 ans à Grenoble où la famille de ma mère vivait et on est retourné à Düsseldorff. J’ai ensuite résidé à Berlin de 1992 à 94 pour mes études. J’étais à l’UDK, Universität der Künste, l’université des arts. Ca semble loin maintenant. A l’époque on ne pouvait pas voir beaucoup de pochoirs ou de collages dans les rues. Ensuite, je suis resté à Hanovre de 1995 à 2000 à l’Art & Design University. Et aujourd’hui, je vis à Düsseldorff.
What is the story of a French guy living in Germany ?
I was born in Düsseldorf but moved 6 month later to Costa Rica for the next 10 years. My father was a development aid worker and had a job there. After that, 1-2 years to Grenoble, my mother’s family lived there and than back to Düsseldorf. In 92-94 I lived in Berlin to start my studies at the UDK, the art university. A long time ago… At that not so many stencils or paste up could be seen on the streets. And then I spent the 1995-2000 in Hannover, art & Design University. Now I live in Düsseldorf.

Quand et comment es-tu venu au pochoir ?
J’ai commencé le graffiti à la fin des années 80. Deux-trois ans plus tard je commençais à repérer des pochoirs politiques (le Che & Castro) dans les rues. J’étais fasciné par ça, avec une envie irrésistible de faire de même, avec mon propre langage et mon travail.
When and how did you come to stencil?
I started with graffiti in the late 80´s. 2-3 years later I begun to notice political stencils (Che & Castro stuff ) on the streets. I was fascinated to do the same, only with my own words & works.
La toute première fois que tu as peint un pochoir dans la rue ?
Je n’en suis pas certain mais cela devait être aux alentours de 1992. J’ai commencé avec des pochoirs inspires des motifs des skateboards dont j’étais fou. Je dois encore avoir un print de cette époque. C’est très drôle de le revoir aujourd’hui.
The very first time you sprayed a stencil outdoor ?
I´m not so sure anymore, but it must be around 92. I started with “skateboard focuses stencils”. I still have one stencil print of that time. Very funny to see it nowadays.

La toute première fois que tu as vendu une oeuvre ?
J’ai vendu ma toute première “œuvre d’art” au collège à mon professeur d’art plastique. Mais cela n’avait rien à voir avec le pochoir ou le graffiti. C’était un travail orienté pop-art ; 25 gobelets en plastiques collés sur une planche de bois.
The very first time you sold a piece of art ?
My first sold “artwork” was in secondary school to my art teacher. But it has nothing to do with stencils or graffiti. It was a pop-art “oriented” work, 25 coffee cups glued on a wood board.
Tes pochoirs représentent tantôt de simples ombres noires tantôt des pochoirs beaucoup plus détaillés. Qu’en est-il de ta technique ?
Parfois j’ai juste envie de véhiculer une émotion particulière à travers mon travail, je réduis donc à sa plus simple expression l’image afin que l’on se concentre sur l’émotion.
You work with black shadows in the mean time than more intricate stencils. What about your technique ?
Sometimes I only want to transport a feeling with my works, so I reduce it all to a minimum to focus it to the emotion.

L’oeuvre que je préfère parmi ton oeuvre est le snipper. Que peux-tu m’en dire ?
J’ai vu un documentaire à la télévision sur des snippers et j’ai immédiatement pensé à les replacer dans des pots de fleurs. Ces mecs sont mon armée de réserve maintenant, haha!
My favourite piece by yours is the snipper. Could you tell about?
I saw a documentary on TV with some snipers and thought directly to put them in flower pots.
These guys are my homegrow army, haha!
Le placement était vraiment réussi avec celui-là. Comment et où l’as-tu peint ? est ce quelque chose d’important pour toi ?
Le placement est très important. Tu peux anéantir ton travail avec un mauvais placement. Parfois je peins un fond des jours avant de venir peindre ou coller mes pièces.
The placements have been so great with this one. How and where did you do that ? Is it something important to you ?
The placement is very important. You could “destroy” your work with a wrong placement.
Sometimes I paint the background days before I spray or paste my works.

As-tu déjà rencontré la police en raison du Street Art ?
Juste une fois. Je venais de terminer cette pièce et j’étais en train de prendre quelques photos au flash. Dix secondes plus tard, trois policiers en civil s’arrêtaient derrière moi et me fouillaient moi et mon sac. Ils ne comprenaient pas pourquoi je collais cette énorme affiche peinte à la main. Ils n’avaient jamais rien de vu tel auparavant. A la fin, je leur ai donné des invitations pour mon expo à venir et mon collage est resté en place sur le mur. Une drôle de situation.
Have you ever met the police because of Street Art?
Only one time. I was just finished and took some pics with flashlight. 10 sec later 3 civil policemen stopped behind me and scaned me and my bag. They didn´t understand why I pasted a huge handpainted “poster” like. They never saw something like these before. At
the end I gave them some invitations for my next show and my paste up stayed there on the wall. A very curious & funny situation.
Comment choisis-tu tes images ?
La moitié environ des mes images sont autobiographiques. L’autre moitié correspond à des thèmes ou des histoires qui tournent autour de moi. Leurs sources sont multiples : la télé, les journaux, dans les rues, au musée.
How did you choose your images ?
Many works, 50%, are autobiographical. The other 50% are themes or stories around me. You could find them everywhere, in tv, in the newspaper, on the streets, in the museum…

Quelle est la part d’influence de Banksy dans ton travail ? on pense beaucoup à lui quand on regarde “forget it…..!” ou le a.t. antique. Est-ce des pieces qui dialoguent avec lui ?
Son travail m’amuse et c’est une icône mais je ne regarde pas dans sa direction pour trouver mes influences ou mes thèmes. J’essaie d’apporter mes propres émotions et idées dans la rue. Mais j’aime aussi l’idée de dialogue, peut-être plus tard.
How big is the Banksy influence in your work ? We think a lot about him when we look at the “forget it…..!” or the a.t. antique. Are those pieces a kind of dialogue with him ?
I enjoy his work. He´s a icon, but I don´t look at him to find my influence or themes. i try to bring my feelings & ideas on the street, but I like the idea with the dialogue, perhaps in future.
Avec qui rêverais-tu d’échanger une pièce ?
Mes rêves sont quelque peu différents, haha. Mais j’adorerais faire un échange avec Bast, Swoon, Gaia, David Choe, El Bocho, Judith Supine, Wk, Chris Stain…. ils sont tellement nombreux !
Who do you dream to swap with ?
My dreams look a bit different, haha. But some artists I would love to swap are Bast, Swoon, Gaia, David Choe, El Bocho, Judith Supine, Wk, Chris Stain,…. too many!

Quel est l’évènement qui tu as le plus apprécié en 2008-09, que tu y aies été présent ou non ?
Je me suis vraiment bien amusé au Festival Upfest à Bristol. Ca a été un grand rassemblement de gens vraiment super. J’attends avec impatience l’édition 2010.
What event of Street art did you most like in 2008-2009 you’ve been there or not?
I really enjoyed my weekend at the Upfest Festival in Bristol. A giant bunch of great people. I´m looking forward for the next upfest, 2010.
Quel est l’artiste qui t’a récemment le plus impressionné ?
Warhol sans hésiter. Son influence sur les artistes suivants est énorme. Il a ouvert de nombreuses portes pour nous tous.
Who is the artist who recently impressed you most? Why ?
Warhol absolutely. His influence for all later artists are enormous. He opened a lot of doors for all of us.

Pourrais-tu décrire l’endroit où tu travailles ? as-tu un atelier ?
J’ai un atelier dans ma maison. L’été je travaille beaucoup dans mon jardin. C’est génial de pouvoir être au vert et faire ce que l’on aime.
Could you describe the place you work in ? Have you got a studio ?
I have a studio in my house. In summer I work a lot in my garden. It´s great to be “in the green” and do a work you love.
Quel est ton livre de Street Art préféré, en dehors de Stencil History X bien-sûr ?
Je n’en ai pas spécialement. Mais j’aime vraiment le livre de Herakut, le Wall & Piece de Banksy, les little people de Slinkachu et j’attends avec impatience le Scratching the Surface de Vhils.
What is your favourite Street Art book (Stencil History X excepted of course) ?
I don´t have a nr. book. I really like Herakut´s book, Banksy´s wall & piece, Slinkachu´s little people….., and I´m looking forward for Vhils scratching the surface book.
