Amsterdam Street Art : overview

Nicole Blommers et l’artiste Ives One sont à l’initiative d’ « Amsterdam Street Art » qui a rassemblé une quinzaine d’artistes dans la ville toute en contrastes d’Anne Franck et des coffee shops. ASA a pris fin le 12 juin dernier après quatre jours de peinture intensive.

Les artistes se sont répartis dans différents lieux d’expositions. Fake, Orticanoodles et Team Hansfred ont exposé leurs dernières créations à la Thought Gallery dans une expo nommée « No Cut it out ». Cette expo pochoir faisait le pendant d’une exposition plus graffiti illustratif, « It’s all about Characters » au Outland Store avec Flying Fortress, London Police, Bue the Warrior et Pez pour n’en citer que quelques uns. « No Cuts, No Glory » exposait les œuvres d’Hugo Kaagman, ou d’Indigo dans des vitrines. Et une exposition collective finale rassemblant le line up complet s’est tenue le dernier jour : le « ASA All Stars » à la Go Gallery. On peut rajouter à ça des performances en live au Bob Youth Hostel ainsi que sur le Museumplein où les artistes ont peint le fameux « I Amsterdam ». ASA a été incontestablement un événement foisonnant surpassant de loin le Kosmopolite 2009. Le pochoir était bien représenté et notamment Hugo Kaagman, la figure historique hollandaise du mouvement qui a débuté sa carrière à la fin des années 70.

Nicole Blommers and artist Ives One created « Amsterdam Street Art » which brought together a dozen artists in the contrasted city of Anne Frank and coffee shops. ASA ended last June 12 after four days of intensive painting.

The artists are divided into different exhibition spaces. Fake Orticanoodles and Hansfred Team presented their latest creations at the Thought Gallery in an exhibition called « No Cut it out ». This exhibition was here beside an exhibition more illustration graffiti , « It’s all about Characters » in Outland Store featuring Flying Fortress, London Police, Pez and Bue the Warrior to name a few. « No Cuts, No Glory » exhibited the works of Hugo Kaagman, or Indigo though windows. And a group show bringing together the final lineup was held the last full day: the « ASA All Stars » at Go Gallery. We can add to this some live performances at the Youth Bob Hostel and on the Museumplein, where artists have painted the famous « I Amsterdam ». ASA was unquestionably a burgeoning event far exceeding the 2009 Kosmopolite. Stencil art was well represented, including Hugo Kaagman the Dutch historical figure of the movement who began his career in the late 70s.

Les Lézarts de la Bièvre, ce week-end

Les Lézarts de la Bièvre fêtent leur dix ans cette année. Retour sur une histoire hors du commun.

L’association des Lezarts de la Bièvre a  pour but de valoriser le patrimoine de la rivière souterraine de la Bièvre qui coule sous les 5e et 13e arrondissements. Pour la petite histoire, la rivière avait été recouverte car, bordée tout du long par des tanneries, l’odeur était tout simplement pestilentielle. On a des témoignages de riverains se plaignant de la puanteur dès le XVIIème siècle et c’est seulement en 1910 qu’on l’a fait disparaître. Depuis, avec l’association, il est question de la faire revivre, et à la surface.

Ainsi, est née l’initiative de baliser le parcours des ateliers portes ouvertes des artistes du quartier par des programmes d’art urbain. Cela a commencé en 2001 avec Miss.Tic, puis Jérôme Mesnager, Mosko et Associés, Nemo, Speedy Graphito, Jef Aérosol, FKDL, Artiste-Ouvrier, et en 2009 Jana & Js. La programmation se fait par cooptation : l’artiste en cours choisit celui de l’édition suivante.

Autant dire que tout ça n’est pas simple… Les peintures de neuf artistes différents coexistent sur les murs, tous les types d’interaction ont déjà été tentés, les meilleurs emplacements déjà pris, de nombreuses pièces sont abimées par le temps comme par le vandalisme, les tags se réfugiant aussi sur les peintures des Lézarts,  à l’abri des services de nettoyage de la ville, etc.

Pour leur dixième anniversaire, les Lézarts de la Bièvre ont invité les artistes des éditions précédentes à intervenir de façon collective sur deux sites du 13^e arrondissement : la poterne des peupliers et le square René le Gall. Et une exposition collective a été organisée afin de prolonger le plaisir avec des œuvres d’ateliers. Presque tout le monde a joué le jeu outdoor – indoor ; on regrettera juste l’absence totale de Nemo et on aurait aimé voir la Miss se renouveler dans son arrondissement fétiche.

Bref, le rendez-vous des aficionados a lieu ce week-end, le fief des Lézarts restant chez Fernando rue de l’Arbalète.

The Lézarts de la Bièvre celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Let’s come back to an unusual history.
The association of Lézarts de la Bièvre aims to promote the heritage of the underground river the Bievre that flows beneath the 5th and 13th districts. For the story, the river had been covered since, bordered all along by the tanneries, the smell was just pestilential. We have testimonials from residents complaining of the stench from the seventeenth century and it has been disappeared only in 1910. Since then, with the association, the people of the area talk about reviving it on the surface.
Thus was born the initiative to chart the course of artists studios of the neighborhood through programs of urban art. It began in 2001 with Miss.Tic and Jerome Mesnager, Mosko et Associés, Nemo, Speedy Graphito, Jef Aerosol, FKDL, Artiste-Ouvrier, and in 2009 Jana & Js. The program is by invitation only: the current artist chooses the one of the following edition.
Suffice to say that it’s not that simple… The paintings of nine different artists coexist on the walls, all types of interaction have already been made, the best locations already taken, many pieces are damaged by time as in the vandalism, the tags also taking refuge on the paintings of Lézarts, free cleaning services to the city, etc..
For their tenth anniversary, the Lézarts de la Bièvre invited artists from the previous editions to work collectively on two sites in the 13th arrondissement: the poterne des peupliers and the Square René le Gall. And an exhibition was organized to extend the fun with studio artworks. Almost everyone has played the game « outdoor – indoor », we just regret the total absence of Nemo and we would have liked to see Miss.Tic renew her favorite neighborough.
In short, the appointment of aficionados takes place this weekend, the stronghold of staying at Lézarts Fernando rue de l’Arbalète.

Logan Hicks, lancement de la sérigraphie Life Line

Logan Hicks a été suivi par l’équipe de Jet Set Graffiti avec son fils Sailor lors de son exposition à la Opera Gallery de NYC et la préparation de sa dernière sérigraphie en cinq couleurs : Life Line ! Elle nous arrive en deux versions. La première est imprimée avec des encres métalliques et pailletées et éditée en 60 exemplaires. La seconde, la version luxe, est limitée à 15 exemplaires et est Gold ! A découvrir pour l’instant à NYC ainsi qu’à Paris à la Galerie Itinerrance dès ce soir.

Logan Hicks was followed by the Jet Set Graffiti‘s video team with his son Sailor at his exhibition at the Opera Gallery in NYC and during the preparation of his last five colors screenprint : Life Line! It comes in two versions. The first one is printed with metallic inks and silver flakes and is an edition of 60. The second one, the deluxe version is limited to 15 copies and is Gold! Check out for the moment in NYC and in Paris at the Galerie Itinerrance tonight.

La Galerie Ligne 13 a programmé une exposition pleines de promesses pour ce début de saison estivale. Une expo trio avec Artiste-Ouvrier, Quasikunst et El Bocho. Les deux premiers ont déjà fait leurs armes en ces murs il y a de cela quelques mois avec une exposition WCA ASA, les collectifs français et allemands fondés par Artiste-Ouvrier. La présence de El Bocho, basé à Berlin, est toutefois inédite. Celui-ci travaille dans la rue, au pinceau de grands portraits de femmes au rendu assez unique. La confrontation de ces trois univers risque d’être intéressante.

Gallery Ligne 13 has scheduled an exhibition full of promise for this early summer. An exhibition trio featuring Artiste-Ouvrier, Quasikunst and El Bocho. The two first guys have already made their weapons in these walls a few months ago through a WCA ASA (the French and German collectivs founded by Artiste-Ouvrier) groupshow. The presence of Berlin based artist El Bocho, is though unprecedented. He works in the streets, with some brush large scale women portraits and he makes them quite unique. The comparison of these three universes might be interesting.

Logan Hicks @ Opera Gallery, NYC

Demain s’ouvre un trio show de tout intérêt à la Opera Gallery de New York avec Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister et Michael Kalish. Côté stencil, nous nous intéressons évidemment de plus près au travail de Logan Hicks, la star américaine historique du pochoir. Tournée « Stencil Only » @ Spacejunk

Le pochoir, à la fois technique et mouvement, s’inscrit dans une tradition française de l’art urbain qui remonte aux années 80 et à la génération punk. Le pochoir connaît aujourd’hui des émules partout à travers le monde, tant dans la rue qu’en galeries ou en salles des ventes. Avec l’expansion du graphisme et de l’illustration contemporaine, le pochoir se définit comme un mode d’expression et un mouvement artistique en ce début de XXIème siècle. Spacejunk a ainsi proposé un petit challenge à certains de ses artistes pas ou peu rompu à l’exercice de cette technique : se confronter, le temps d’une exposition, à un groupe d’artistes de la scène spécialisée européenne et américaine. La sélection est faite par votre fidèle serviteur de Stencil History X. Il ne vous reste plus qu’à rentrer maintenant dans l’arène de l’exposition « Stencil Only ».

At once a technique and a movement, the stencil has inscribed itself into the French tradition of urban art which dates back to the 1980’s and the punk generation. The stencil nowadays is emulated everywhere in the world; its presence felt in the streets as much as in the gallery or salesroom. Along with the expansion of contemporary graphic design and illustration, the stencil has defined itself as a mode of expression and an artistic movement for the 21st century. Spacejunk has proposed then to challenge a certain number of its artists who have had little or no experience working in this medium, to face off with a group of European and American artists specialized in the field during the course of the exhibit. The selection of artists was carried out by Samantha Longhi, Europe’s stencil expert. And now, there’s only one thing left for you to do: enter into the arena of the exhibit “Stencil Only”.

Jef Aerosol solo show @ Signal Gallery, Londres

Jef Aerosol présente une exposition qui sort de son ordinaire à la Signal Gallery qui présente à l’année des artistes de talent tels que C215 ou Dale Grimshaw. Jef Aérosol prend des distances vis à vis des VIP qui ont envahi la Ad Hoc lors de sa dernière expo solo à New York pour s’intéresser cette fois aux femmes.  Ce thème, bien que dénué d’originalité (et d’autant plus dans le champ du pochoir), apporte un nouveau regard sensuel au travail de Jef. On retrouve là on ne l’attendait pas sa facture habituelle.

Jef Aerosol presents a show that comes out of his habits at Signal Gallery which representents now talented artists such as C215 or Dale Grimshaw. Jef Aerosol takes distances towards VIPs who used to invade the Ad Hoc Gallery at his last solo show in New York. This time he looked at women. This topic, though devoid of originality (and especially in the field of stencil art), brought the work of Jef Aerosol in a new and sensual light. Here we find the usual style of Jef where we do not expect  him.

Jana & Js, Centre d’art La Lune en Parachute, Epinal

Le centre d’art la Lune en Parachute à Epinal présente l’exposition collective « Ancrage » avec les artistes Katrin Fridricks, Corine Borgnet, Robert Gligorov et Jana & Js.
Ces quatre artistes croisent leurs univers et leur pratique au travers de 4 médiums : la peinture, la sculpture, la photographie et le pochoir dans le nouvel espace de 600 mètres carrés de la Lune en Parachute, la Plomberie.
A cette occasion, Jana & Js présentent une vingtaine de travaux inédits qui développent notamment deux nouveaux axes en gestation depuis ce début 2010 : des portraits (et autoportraits) se détachant en transparence devant des façades d’architectures colorés ainsi que des reconstitutions de façade peintes au pochoir et réalisées en volume. Leur support de prédilection reste le bois malgré la présence de quelques toiles.

The art center the Lune en Parachute in Epinal presents the group show « Ancrage » featuring artists Katrin Fridricks, Corine Borgnet, Robert Gligorov and Jana & Js.
These four artists intersect their world and their practice through four techniques: painting, sculpture, photography and stencil in this new space of 600 square meters, la Plomberie.
On this occasion, Jana & Js have a score of unpublished artworks including developing two new lines in gestation since early 2010: portraits (and self-portraits) standing out in front of transparent colored facades and architectural reconstructions of façades  painted with stencil and realized in volume. Their preferred medium is wood despite the presence of some paintings.

C215 solo show, Milan

C215 va ouvrir sa première expo solo en Italie le 29 avril prochain. Organisée par Urbanpainting, l’exposition va rassembler un peu plus de 60 pièces originales du prodige français du pochoir. C’est la première fois que l’on pourra voir un panel rétrospectif de son oeuvre. On compte par ailleurs sur lui pour ne pas se cantonner aux murs de la galerie, Milan lui est ouvert…

Sten & Lex solo show, Galerie Itinerrance, Paris

Sten & Lex se sont fait connaître par leur utilisation atypique du pochoir, qui de manière fastidieuse, donne un rendu de trame offset.  C’est ensuite leur approche monumentale de la rue et la poésie iconique de leurs sujets qui a construit leur notoriété actuelle. Cette exposition marque une étape vers l’affirmation de leur démarche artistique hors du commun, avec un nouveau concept, le  « Stencil Poster ». Récusant désormais complètement le caractère reproductible du pochoir, chaque pochoir devient unique. Chaque pochoir n’est utilisé qu’une fois ; sa matrice est détruite et est intégrée à l’œuvre elle-même. L’éphémère de la rue fait écho à la pérennité de l’œuvre au sein de la galerie.

Sten & Lex are known for their unusual and so tedious practice of stencil art which provides an offset look. Their approach of the street in a monumental way and the iconic poetry of their subjects built their current reputation.
This exhibition marks a step toward the affirmation of their career, with a new concept : the «Stencil Poster». They are now completely challenging the repeatable nature of stencil art ; each stencil is unique. Each stencil is used only once, the stencil itself is destroyed and is incorporated into the artwork itself. The ephemeral of the street reflects the continuity of the work in the gallery.
