Lundi, c’est le Stencil of the Week : Joe Iurato

Joe Iurato habite à NYC et a débuté le pochoir il y a un peu plus de six mois. Nous nous sommes croisés à NYC en décembre dernier quand il est venu rencontrer C215 à la Ad Hoc Gallery pendant l’accrochage. Il était dans une fan attitude d’une part, et dans une position d’humilité d’autre part quant à sa production naissante. Il a ensuite été candidat pour participer à la dernière exposition Stencil History X à Berlin en février dernier et y a proposé de très belles pièces. Depuis, je suis et j’observe son parcours et vais de surprises en surprises, la dernière en date étant cette oeuvre sur bois qui sera incluse dans sa prochaine expo. The 01 Show débute le 23 mai  au Cafe Electic à Montclair, New Jersey. 01 évoque pour Joe Iurato la toute première seconde d’un mouvement vers l’avant. Il faut savoir que Joe Iurato s’est fait licensier début avril. Il a décidé de prendre le parti du destin et donc le risque de se lancer artistiquement. Ce nouveau départ est un moment qu’il qualifie de lumineux et doux-amer à la fois. Et on peut lui souhaiter bonne chance ! Joe Iurato sera par ailleurs bientôt présenté dans le Online Store de SHX et nous reparlerons de son expo.

Joe Iurato NYC based, began stencilling a little over six months ago. We met quickly in NYC last December when he came to encounter C215 in the Ad Hoc Gallery during the hanging. On one hand he came as a fan, and he stood in a position of humility on the other hand considering his new production. He submitted some of his artworks to the last Stencil History X groupshow in Berlin last February and provided beautiful pieces. Since then, I follow his work and I am getting surprised every week. That’s why his latest painting deserves to be awarded here. And it will be included in his upcoming solo show. The 01 Show starts May 23rd at Cafe Eclectic in Montclair, New Jersey. 01 suggests the very first second of movement in a forward direction. You should know that Joe Iurato lost his job early April. He decided to choose destiny and therefore to take the risk of launching new start. This new beginning is a moment he described as enlightening and bittersweet at the same time. And we can wish him good luck! Joe Iurato will also soon be introduced in the Online Store of SHX and we’ll talk more about his solo show.

Joe Iurato réussit à capter et représenter les différentes énergies que la ville émet la nuit. Voici ici une toile représentant un panneau de direction du métro new-yorkais avec toutes ses nuances de gris métallisés et de lumière électrique.

La notion, d’évasion revient régulièrement dans le travail de Joe Iurato. Cette toile représente ici un grillage en gros plan. Il faut aussi savoir que la grille est un motif d’exercice de style dans le pochoir car permet de s’exercer à rendre reflets et profondeur. Joe Iurato a également compris comment éviter de circonscrire sa surface de travail, il laisse les contours flous ce qui donne un effet supplémentaire onirique.

The notion of escape is oftenly trated in Joe Iurato’s work. This painting represents a close-up of a fence. It is also noteworthy that the grid is a common stylistic composition for stencil artists because it makes to practice reflections and depth. Joe Iurato also understood how to avoid restricting his scale; he makes his outlines vague and that gives an additional dreamlike effect.

Commited porte également sur l’évasion et est inspire d’une photographie datant de 1937 représentant un grimpeur nocturne s’enfuyant de Cambridge College. Joe Iurato s’intéresse également de près aux ambiances nocturnes qu’il retranscrit avec des effets de lumière savants. La grille et le grillage sont aussi des éléments représentatifs du lieu de l’action : la ville.

Committed is also about escape and is inspired by a picture dating from 1937 depicting a night climber escaping away from Cambridge College. Joe Iurato is also interested in the nightlife he presents with light effects scholars. The grid is also a clue of the location of the scene : the city.

C215 et la tournée Stencil History X Tour arrive à Berlin aujourd’hui 13 Février 2009. Pour la première fois, plus de 140 œuvres seront présentées dans une double exposition à la Intoxicated Demons Gallery et à la Galerie ATM.
