Joe Iurato vient de se lancer  dans une nouvelle série de portraits d’une sélection de musiciens interprètes de la fameuse chanson « Summertime » de Porgy and Bess. Le premier d’entre eux est Tom Waits, dans une facture qui reste propre à Joe Iurato,  délicate et poétique.
Summertime est et reste une de mes chansons culte ; j’attends donc personnellement avec impatience ma préférée, Janis Joplin, et aussi la très sexy Scarlett Johansson.

Joe Iurato just launched a new series of portraits featuring a selection of musicians and performers of the famous song « Summertime » from Porgy and Bess. The first of them is Tom Waits in a style that is personnal to Joe Iurato, delicate and poetic.

Avec cette nouvelle pièce, on ne peut être qu’agréablement surpris face à son travail à l’acrylique et le choix audacieux du cadrage. Inspirée d’une chanson de Leonard Cohen, « Dance me til the end of love » mérite au plus haut point son statut de Stencil Of The Week.

With this new piece, we can be pleasantly surprised to meet his work in acrylic and his choice of framing. Inspired by a song by Leonard Cohen, « Dance me til the end of love » deserves the utmost status of Stencil Of The Week.

Joe Iurato : Spray for Haïti

Le pochoiriste américain Joe Iurato, en 2009, reversait 25% des bénéfices de son cycle d’expositions : 01 à l’organisation caritative « Wine for Water » afin de favoriser l’accès à l’eau en Ethiopie. Réaliser des portraits d’enfants était pour lui un symbole d’espoir universel. Une nuit de 2010, Joe Iurato, devant le spectacle paisible que lui offrait sa famille endormie, s’est vu accablé par la tristesse devant la douleur du peuple de Haïti. Conscient de ce qu’est la générosité de la peinture et du street art, il a voulu faire un geste à son niveau. C’est pourquoi, le 14 janvier dernier, il a lancé une édition limitée de pochoirs en 10 exemplaires. Elle s’est vendue en quelques heures. Les produits de cette vente ont été directement reversés à l’UNICEF, chaque pièce étant partie à $50. Quatre jours plus tard, il décide de lancer une seconde édition de 20 exemplaires.
Il a alors reçu un mail d’un de ses anciens acheteurs qui souhaitait en acquérir une oeuvre de la série et lorsque Joe lui a annoncé qu’il lançait une seconde édition suite au succès de la première, ce monsieur a voulu acquérir la série entière pour $3000 (soit trois fois le prix unitaire initial!). Finalement, il a demandé à ne recevoir qu’une seule oeuvre et de remettre en vente les 19 restantes. Joe a atteint la semaine dernière la somme de $5000.

Cette histoire démontre que tout est possible à tous les échelons. Alors le mot d’ordre reste l’espoir.

In 2009, American stencil artist Joe Iurato donated 25% of the proceeds from his cycle of shows : 01 to the non-profit org « Wine for Water » to improve access to water in Ethiopia. Making portraits of children was for him a universal symbol of hope. One night in 2010, Joe Iurato since he was watching his sleeping peaceful family, had been overwhelmed by sadness connecting with the suffering of the people of Haiti. Aware of what the generosity of painting and street art could be, he personnaly wanted to act. Therefore, January 14, he released limited edition stencil in 10 copies. It was sold within hours. The proceeds of this sale were donated directly to UNICEF, each piece being sold at $50. Four days later, he decided to launch a second edition of 20 copies.
He then received an email from a former buyer who wanted to acquire a piece of the series and when Joe told him he was about to release a second edition following the success of the first one, this gentleman decided to buy the entire series for $ 3000 (three times the original retail price!). Finally, he asked to receive only one to enable Joe to sell the 19 remaining. Joe reached last week  the global amount of $ 5000.

This story shows that everything is possible at every level. So keep hoping!

Joe Iurato vient de réaliser son premier pochoir de rue grand format. Bien que j’ai été au premier regard perturbée par l’insertion des couleurs, je dois avouer que le résultat est à la hauteur de ses plus petits formats en gammes de noirs et gris. La poésie n’en perd rien, au contraire.

Joe Iurato has just completed his first large scale outdoor stencil. While I was at first glance disrupted by the insertion of colors, I must admit that the result is equal to his smaller greyscales pieces. Poetry wins.

Joe Iurato « Re Ba » show // :01 project

Nous avons déjà parlé à maintes reprises du travail de Joe Iurato qui est un artiste émergent et dynamique de NYC. Il a commencé le mois dernier une série d’expositions sous le label :01 dont 25% des bénéfices sont reversés à l’organisation caritative Wine For Water qui milite pour favoriser l’accès à l’eau dans les parties les plus pauvres du globe, notamment en Ethiopie. Le second volet de sa tournée est une exposition nommée “Re ba” ce qui signifie Espoir en Tibétain. C’est pourquoi il s’est attaché ici à réaliser des portraits d’enfants qui sont pour lui le meilleur symbole d’espoir qui soit. On pourra ainsi découvrir 10 pièces complètement inédites. C’est l’occasion de soutenir en même temps un projet exceptionnel et un artiste exceptionnel.

«  »Re ba » signifie « espoir » en tibétain. Rien ne représente plus l’espoir qu’un enfant. Si tous les enfants d’aujourd’hui grandissent ensemble, chacun recevant les enseignements des plus sages esprits et des cœurs les plus purs, ils s’uniront demain. We have already repeatedly mentioned the work of Joe Iurato who is an emerging and dynamic based NYC stencil artist. He started last month a series of solo shows under the label: 01 which 25% of all proceeds are donated to a non-profit org Wine For Water which advocates to improve access to water in the poorest regions of the world, particularly Ethiopia. This is why he has been here to make portraits of children who are for him the best ever symbol of hope. 10 very new artworks can be discovered there. This is an opportunity to support both a remarkable project and an exceptional artist.

Quand et comment en es-tu venu au pochoir ?
Mon parcours est semblable à celui de bon nombre d’autres acteurs de la scène pochoiriste. A l’époque, durant les années 80, toute l’imagerie de la scène punk ou alternative transpirait le Do It Yourself et le côté trash du pochoir. Je baignais dedans, mais je n’y faisais pas attention, ça faisait partie des meubles, de mes meubles…. Puis, en 2002, j’ai été initié au medium qu’est le pochoir par un autre artiste pluridisciplinaire, Rnest des OCT. J’adorais le coté rock’n’roll et répétitif du truc. Tu as besoin d’une flèche pour indiquer le chemin d’un concert, et tu as le moyen le plus simple et le moins coûteux entre les mains. Puis je me suis vite pris au jeu de la complexité du sujet… Mais par chez moi, le pochoir n’a pas forcement la belle vie. Le graffiti est présent partout et la place est devenue rare. J’ai bossé aussi pas mal sur stickers, mais pas de visibilité non plus. Et comme la peinture se nourrit du regard du spectateur, alors je me suis plutôt tourné vers la « toile ». En me décollant le nez du mur et en travaillant de plus en plus régulièrement, j’ai pu prendre du recul et du temps pour essayer de comprendre le pochoir. Et à force d’erreurs et de livres sur l’art, j’avance petit à petit et construis mon univers…

When and how did you come to stencil?
My career is similar to many other stencil artists. At this time all the imagery of the punk scene was about the DIY with the trash style of stencil. I swam in there, but I did not pay attention to it, it was just part my world. In 2002, I was introduced to stencil by an artist, Rnest STO. I loved its rock’n'roll side and the repetitive thing. You need an arrow to indicate the path to a concert and you get the easiest and least expensive tool in the hands. Then I got caught up in the complexity of the subject … But in my city, the stencil is not so happy. The graffiti is everywhere and the empty places have become scarce. I also worked a lot on stickers, but not visible either. And since painting is nourished by the viewer’s eye, I turned instead to the « canvas ». In moving away from the wall and working more and more regularly, I stood back and took time to try to understand the stencil. I am slowly moving forward and building my world by dint of mistakes and art books.

« Une seule seconde est la plus puissante mesure du temps. Elle peut symboliser un bref dernier  moment avant une fin, ou la marque évidente d’un nouveau départ. Elle peut apparaître aux deux à la fois, une fois comme une situation qui trouve son chemin vers le destin et une chance de plus de commencer. C’est alors que: 01 est le moment le plus significatif dans la vie d’une personne. Il est né de la bénédiction née de la difficulté. L’honnêteté, le destin et le bonheur trouvent parfois plus facilement leur chemin, après que la poussière nous ait éclaboussé. Cette exposition est mon: 01. Quelle est le vôtre? «

Lundi, c’est le Stencil of the Week : Joe Iurato

Joe Iurato habite à NYC et a débuté le pochoir il y a un peu plus de six mois. Nous nous sommes croisés à NYC en décembre dernier quand il est venu rencontrer C215 à la Ad Hoc Gallery pendant l’accrochage. Il était dans une fan attitude d’une part, et dans une position d’humilité d’autre part quant à sa production naissante. Il a ensuite été candidat pour participer à la dernière exposition Stencil History X à Berlin en février dernier et y a proposé de très belles pièces. Depuis, je suis et j’observe son parcours et vais de surprises en surprises, la dernière en date étant cette oeuvre sur bois qui sera incluse dans sa prochaine expo. The 01 Show débute le 23 mai  au Cafe Electic à Montclair, New Jersey. 01 évoque pour Joe Iurato la toute première seconde d’un mouvement vers l’avant. Il faut savoir que Joe Iurato s’est fait licensier début avril. Il a décidé de prendre le parti du destin et donc le risque de se lancer artistiquement. Ce nouveau départ est un moment qu’il qualifie de lumineux et doux-amer à la fois. Et on peut lui souhaiter bonne chance ! Joe Iurato sera par ailleurs bientôt présenté dans le Online Store de SHX et nous reparlerons de son expo.

Joe Iurato NYC based, began stencilling a little over six months ago. We met quickly in NYC last December when he came to encounter C215 in the Ad Hoc Gallery during the hanging. On one hand he came as a fan, and he stood in a position of humility on the other hand considering his new production. He submitted some of his artworks to the last Stencil History X groupshow in Berlin last February and provided beautiful pieces. Since then, I follow his work and I am getting surprised every week. That’s why his latest painting deserves to be awarded here. And it will be included in his upcoming solo show. The 01 Show starts May 23rd at Cafe Eclectic in Montclair, New Jersey. 01 suggests the very first second of movement in a forward direction. You should know that Joe Iurato lost his job early April. He decided to choose destiny and therefore to take the risk of launching new start. This new beginning is a moment he described as enlightening and bittersweet at the same time. And we can wish him good luck! Joe Iurato will also soon be introduced in the Online Store of SHX and we’ll talk more about his solo show.
